Somebody set the courthouse on fire. It was Paul.

Jay Barrett didn’t come to faith through a sermon. He came to it through fourteen years in the Army and the PTSD and depression he carried home from combat, through drugs and violence, and through weekends bouncing at biker bars alongside outlaw motorcycle clubs. When a divine encounter finally pulled him through the church doors, he found a religion that couldn’t survive his questions, one that had read Romans like a trial transcript for five hundred years. God on the bench. You in the dock. Eternity riding on whether you can work up enough faith before the gavel falls.

So he spent nearly two decades tearing his theology down and rebuilding it, in seminary classrooms and in the dark nights of his own soul. That search eventually led him to pastor a local church, where he found a congregation full of people just like him: exhausted by religion and starving for something real. The same search led him to a story that starts in a garden, not a courtroom, with a whispered lie: You are alone. We’ve been hiding ever since. God came looking for us—into our skin, into our darkness, all the way into death. Death licked its lips. It never saw the ambush coming.

Now read Romans backward, from the empty tomb. The Gatekeeper, religion’s oldest prosecutor, takes the microphone, and the letter he used to convict you becomes the match that burns his courthouse to the ground. When the smoke clears, there is no judge’s bench. There is a Table, set before the foundation of the world, crowded with slaves and aristocrats, Jews and gentiles, strangers who turn out to be family. There is a seat there with your name on it. There always was.

Where You Always Were is Jay’s first book, a theology forged not in academia but in the wreckage he lived through and helped cause. It’s for the exhausted, the exiled, and everyone halfway out the door, and for the pastors still standing guard in the pews who suspect there’s more to the story.

You don’t have to fight your way back to God. You only have to wake up to where you always were.
